Must Reads

I’ve read dozens of books about autism and found the following to be the most insightful to understanding and treating autism:

An Early Start for your Child with Autism by Drs. Sally Rogers and Geraldine Dawson details ESDM therapeutic activities that parents can do with their children.

Emergence and Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism by Temple Grandin were particularly helpful to me in better understanding my daughter’s autism. Grandin has classic autism and has written many other wonderful books. The HBO movie Temple Grandin is also excellent.

In A Different Key: The Story of Autism by John Donvan and Caren Zucker, chronicles the history of autism and provides a thorough education for anyone interested in the topic.

Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism by Barry M. Prizant and Tom Fields-Meyer, is a beautifully written book about Prizant’s experiences working with autistic children and appreciating their unusual way of perceiving the world.

The Reason I Jump by another classically autistic author, Naoki Higashida, is an enlightening story about his struggles to communicate and interact with others.

Life, Animated (book and documentary) by Ron Suskind tells the story of how his autistic son learned to relate to the world through Walt Disney movies.
